20世紀(jì)末，面對(duì)“無敵”級(jí)航母陸續(xù)退役，**海軍將無航母可用的窘境，**海軍于1997年啟動(dòng)了新型航空母艦建造計(jì)劃，即單艦造價(jià)高達(dá)62億英鎊的“伊麗莎白女王”級(jí)航空母艦，首艦“伊麗莎白女王”號(hào)（HMS Queen Elizabeth）于2014年下水，2017年加入現(xiàn)役，次艦“威爾士親王”號(hào)（HMS Prince of Wales）于2017年下水。“伊麗莎白女王”號(hào)滿載排水量達(dá)6.5萬噸，最大載機(jī)量40架，是**海軍有史以來最大的戰(zhàn)艦。這一級(jí)航母的下水，使得英國重新成為第二大航母強(qiáng)國。

然而，“伊麗莎白女王”號(hào)航母下水后卻問題不斷，首先是航母密封性不佳，多次發(fā)生進(jìn)水事故，導(dǎo)致艦員天天在“泡澡”陰影中提心吊膽，其次是艦載機(jī)遲遲不能落實(shí)，航母長(zhǎng)期“裸奔”，第三是“小馬拉大車”，航母的全電動(dòng)推進(jìn)系統(tǒng)總功率只有100多兆瓦，導(dǎo)致航母最大航速只有27節(jié)。而中國“遼寧”號(hào)的總功率是149兆瓦，最大航速29節(jié)。而“威爾士親王”號(hào)雖然下水，服役時(shí)間卻一再推遲，由于缺錢，不得不把原定搭載的固定翼飛機(jī)改成直升機(jī)，這使“威爾士親王”成了一艘大型直升機(jī)登陸艦。

總的來說，航空母艦是大國國力的一個(gè)標(biāo)志，英國航空母艦的發(fā)展史，就是一個(gè)老牌資本主義大國的國力演變史，雖然英國人理想很豐滿，但無奈現(xiàn)實(shí)很骨感，所以有人說，英國的航空母艦發(fā)展，是“起了個(gè)大早，趕了個(gè)晚集?！?/p>
