爵位是歐洲封建君主國內(nèi)分封貴族的等級制度。它最早出現(xiàn)于中世紀(jì)，在近代的一些國家中仍然繼續(xù)沿用。一般以占有土地的多少來確定分封爵銜之高低，主要可分為公爵、侯爵、伯爵、子爵、男爵這五等。

公爵：在貴族中，公爵是第一等級，地位最高。這個爵名的由來有三：一是歐洲氏族社會解體時期，日耳曼部落的軍事首長；二是古代羅馬部落的軍事首長；三是古羅馬時代的邊省將領(lǐng)，后指地方軍政長官，其拉丁文原意為"統(tǒng)帥"。隨著封建關(guān)系的發(fā)展，王權(quán)的日益強化，公爵成了統(tǒng)治階級中的上層人物。在英國，公爵最初是由十四世紀(jì)的英王愛德華三世分封的，被封這公爵的全是王室成員。十五世紀(jì)后才打破這慣例，少數(shù)非王室人員也被封為公爵。

侯爵：侯爵是貴族的第二等級。查理大帝在位時它是指具有特別全權(quán)的邊區(qū)長官，相當(dāng)于藩侯，查理曼帝國分裂后，變成了獨立的大封建領(lǐng)主。封建王權(quán)加強后，侯爵成為公爵與伯爵之間的爵銜，其地位與其他伯爵相等，十到十四世紀(jì)后，才確認(rèn)侯爵的地位在伯上之上。

子爵：子爵原系法蘭克王國的國家官吏名，最早是由國王查理曼于八世紀(jì)時封的，后來傳到歐洲其他大陸國家。起初，子爵是伯爵的副手，后來獨立存在，也可世襲。子爵爵位到十五世紀(jì)才傳入英國，博蒙德·約翰于一四四○年第一個被封為英國子爵，其地位在男爵之上。

男爵：男爵是貴族爵位中最低的一級。在十一至十二世紀(jì)時，它是歐洲君主國國王或大封建主的直接附庸。在英語中，男爵（Baron）一詞，是諾曼人在征服歐洲大陸時引進(jìn)來的，本義為"只不過是普通的人"，后來演變?yōu)?強有力的人"。當(dāng)時，英國的那些直接從國王那兒得到土地的大佃主，概可稱為男爵，但這并非由國王分封。到了一三八七年理查二世約翰·比徹姆為男爵后，男爵才成為英國貴族的正式爵位。
