西周的翻譯術(shù)語(yǔ)

西周第一個(gè)把“Philosophy”翻譯為漢字“哲學(xué)”，一直被沿用至今。1862年，西周在致松岡麟次郎的信中將“Philosophy”譯作漢字“西洋性理學(xué)”及片假名“ヒロソヒ”。在他為津田真道《性理論》所作的跋文中說(shuō)：“西土之學(xué)，傳之既百年余，至格物（物理）、舍密（化學(xué)）、地理、器械諸科，間有窺其室者，獨(dú)吾‘希哲’一科，則未見(jiàn)其二矣?！?這里譯作“希哲學(xué)”，又在《西洋哲學(xué)史講義片斷》中也用同樣的譯法。據(jù)說(shuō)是取自中國(guó)周敦頤的“士希賢”，故譯作“希哲學(xué)”，表示希求賢哲的意思。按希臘文“愛(ài)智慧”的原意，此譯法也算達(dá)意。以上是他出國(guó)前的譯法。經(jīng)過(guò)荷蘭留學(xué)和回國(guó)后的繼續(xù)鉆研，對(duì)哲學(xué)的真正含義有了進(jìn)一步的理解。在1870年的《開(kāi)門(mén)題》中，以漢文譯其音為“斐鹵蘇比”。在同年開(kāi)講的《百學(xué)連環(huán)》、1872年起稿的《美妙學(xué)說(shuō)》及《生性發(fā)蘊(yùn)》中，譯作“哲學(xué)”。但這些都是稿本，不能完全排除以后修改的成分，只能說(shuō)從此時(shí)開(kāi)始他已決定將“Philosophy”譯作“哲學(xué)”。第一次公開(kāi)定譯為“哲學(xué)”，是1874年刊行的《百一新論》。書(shū)中寫(xiě)道：“把論明天道人道，兼之教法的Philosophy譯名為哲學(xué)?！?此后一直被大家公認(rèn)使用，直至今日。

除此之外，諸如“主觀”、“客觀”、“理性”、“悟性”、“現(xiàn)象”、“實(shí)在”、“歸納”、“演繹”、“義務(wù)”、“權(quán)利”、“科學(xué)”等哲學(xué)與社會(huì)科學(xué)術(shù)語(yǔ)的漢字譯名，都是西周反復(fù)推敲之后得出的。至今仍在日本、中國(guó)等漢字文化圈國(guó)家廣泛使用。這是西周在東方哲學(xué)史上的重大貢獻(xiàn)。不過(guò)有趣的是，西周雖然將大量西方社會(huì)科學(xué)術(shù)語(yǔ)翻譯成漢字，他本人卻主張廢除漢字，以羅馬字替代，曾在《明六雜志》創(chuàng)刊號(hào)上發(fā)表《以洋字書(shū)國(guó)語(yǔ)之論》來(lái)闡述他的這一主張。
