因?yàn)樯鲜鲇霸u(píng)，21世紀(jì)?？怂构竞托闾m·鄧波爾的家人起訴了格林。有人說(shuō)他因此逃到墨西哥，直到官非結(jié)束才回國(guó)，有人說(shuō)他去墨西哥是為寫作《The Power and The Glory 》收集素材，不是怕事。不管怎么說(shuō)，因禍得福，《The Power and The Glory 》后來(lái)成為格林最早獲得社會(huì)承認(rèn)的**。

從對(duì)秀蘭·鄧波爾的態(tài)度到“破壞者”及其里面的T.，雖然我們不能說(shuō)格雷厄姆·格林厭惡孩子——雖然他曾直言不諱地說(shuō)： " I think my books are my children ." ——雖然他有自己的孩子，但有一點(diǎn)可以肯定，格林并不認(rèn)為孩子是理所當(dāng)然的天使。

故事里的老師人不壞，但喜歡以刻薄的一面示人。普天之下男性語(yǔ)文老師大多如此。他們的閱讀量和詞匯量非小學(xué)生可比，口舌自然鋒利，加上喜歡賣弄，形象愈發(fā)顯得促狹、蠻橫。詹姆斯接觸過(guò)的老師應(yīng)較常人為多，描述起來(lái)自然會(huì)得心應(yīng)手。好在他沒(méi)吃過(guò)虧，身心健康，筆鋒所到之處比格雷厄姆·格林正面、積極。比如說(shuō)到哈里森的老師里柏先生，他這樣寫道：里柏先生有好些個(gè)常人莫及之處，比如說(shuō)學(xué)校的學(xué)生換了一茬又一茬，愣是沒(méi)人敢給他起外號(hào)。還有，你千萬(wàn)不要有什么他認(rèn)為值得嘲弄和諷刺的性情或行為被他偵查到，不然他會(huì)沒(méi)完沒(méi)了換著法子逗你、揶揄你。雖然他人不壞（obscurely kind），出手還算仁慈（gently sadistic），可每當(dāng)遇到這樣的機(jī)會(huì)他就兩眼發(fā)光、興趣盎然，發(fā)自內(nèi)心地滿心歡喜，絕不會(huì)錯(cuò)過(guò)。

哈里森是班上的班長(zhǎng)，運(yùn)動(dòng)健將，數(shù)學(xué)也不錯(cuò)，就是不愛(ài)寫作文。他知道里柏先生一直在等他出丑。這天，里柏先生布置的作文是：描述你所知道的某一外國(guó)首都。限時(shí)一小時(shí)。二戰(zhàn)期間哈里森的父母曾把他送到美國(guó)“避難”，這事不知怎么被里柏先生知道了。所以，布置完作業(yè)后里柏先生特意對(duì)哈里森說(shuō)：不消說(shuō)，哈里森，你肯定會(huì)寫華盛頓。一定的，你一定要寫。那一段經(jīng)歷對(duì)你來(lái)說(shuō)一定十分獨(dú)特，不記錄下來(lái)會(huì)忘記的，那太可惜了，不說(shuō)你，我們都承受不起這個(gè)損失。

上述設(shè)計(jì)別有深意。簡(jiǎn)言而之，馬克·吐溫認(rèn)為，夢(mèng)境通常是 "deep and strong and sharp and real"，而現(xiàn)實(shí)不外是個(gè) "vague and dull-tinted artificial world"，人們習(xí)慣于戴著面具生活。
