對于這樣一部史實(shí)性的影片，我們應(yīng)該首先了解一下影片發(fā)生的背景，這更有助于我們對整部影片的理解。盧旺達(dá)是位于非洲中東部赤道兩側(cè)的內(nèi)陸國家。其人口由胡圖、圖西和特瓦三個(gè)部族組成。其中，特瓦族只占全國人口的1%左右。也就是說，占盧旺達(dá)人口絕大多數(shù)的部族是胡圖和圖西。早在16世紀(jì)，圖西族人就在盧旺達(dá)建立了封建王國。自19世紀(jì)中葉起，英國、德國、比利時(shí)等西方殖民勢力相繼侵入。1890年年盧旺達(dá)淪為“德屬東非”保護(hù)地，1916年被又比利時(shí)占領(lǐng)。德國在一戰(zhàn)中戰(zhàn)敗后，根據(jù)1922的《凡爾賽和約》，國聯(lián)將起“委托”比利時(shí)統(tǒng)治，成為比屬盧安達(dá)－烏隆迪的一部分。二站后，成為聯(lián)合國托管地，但仍由比利時(shí)統(tǒng)治。1960年，比利時(shí)同意盧旺達(dá)“自治”的要求。1962年7月1日，盧旺達(dá)共和國成立。1994年發(fā)生的種族屠殺并不是該國歷史上第一次。西方殖民主義者在盧旺達(dá)統(tǒng)治期間運(yùn)用了很多卑鄙的手段，實(shí)行“間接統(tǒng)治”和“分而治之”：先用占人口14％的圖西人統(tǒng)治占人口85％的胡圖人，后又利用胡圖人反對圖西人并統(tǒng)治圖西人。這種手段直接導(dǎo)致1959年、1963年、1967年和1973年先后發(fā)生4次大規(guī)模部族流血沖突。一批又一批圖西人被迫逃往鄰國。1994年4月6日，盧旺達(dá)總統(tǒng)和布隆迪總統(tǒng)同乘的座機(jī)在盧旺達(dá)首都基加利上空被火箭擊落，兩國元首同時(shí)罹難。4月7日，空難在盧旺達(dá)國內(nèi)立即引發(fā)了胡圖族與圖西族兩族的猜疑，相互職責(zé)對方殺死總統(tǒng)，破壞和平。自此，盧旺達(dá)爆發(fā)了一場規(guī)?？涨暗奈溲b沖突和部族大屠殺。百日之內(nèi)約有100萬人死于非命，200多萬難民逃往國外，另有200多萬人流離失所。

影片通過主人公保羅·魯塞薩巴吉納的個(gè)人行為向人們真實(shí)地再現(xiàn)了發(fā)生在10年的人間慘劇。它是藝術(shù)的，又是紀(jì)實(shí)的。 Terry George畢竟是一個(gè)來自西方國家的導(dǎo)演，他在真實(shí)錄述事件的同時(shí)，還給了自己西方同胞大量的關(guān)注。比如影片中出現(xiàn)的聯(lián)合國維和部隊(duì)的長官、新聞?dòng)浾?、紅十字會(huì)的女工作者。而與此形成鮮明對比地是，除了主人公和他的家庭成員，許多在飯店避難的圖西族人被設(shè)定成了一種固有模式下的臉譜化形象——無助、弱小、悲傷。導(dǎo)演是同情他們的，但是在影片中給予他們的關(guān)注是有限的。大多數(shù)情況下，這些人是作為一個(gè)群體出現(xiàn)在導(dǎo)演的鏡頭中，這是影片對人物刻畫明顯不足的地方。當(dāng)然，瑕不掩瑜。對于這樣一個(gè)歷史性題材，又涉及到很多人的私人感情，要想把它拍得十全十美也是不可能的。導(dǎo)演的目的很簡單，就是要通過自己的鏡頭，重現(xiàn)10年發(fā)生的悲劇，讓更多不明真相的人了解到事件的真實(shí)情況。它是警醒式的，這樣的影片自然要充當(dāng)一種宣傳員的角色，它必定要使更多人通過看影片之后思考、汲取教訓(xùn)。20世紀(jì)的90年代和40年代不能同日而語，更多的國家知道了自由和民主的含義，科學(xué)技術(shù)日新月異的發(fā)展，人們的生活水平在不斷地提到?？删褪窃谶@樣的背景下，相同的屠殺還是發(fā)生了。這不禁會(huì)使看過**的人思考——屠殺為什么會(huì)發(fā)生。事實(shí)上，早在慘案發(fā)生之前，就有人向聯(lián)合國提出關(guān)于盧旺達(dá)可能發(fā)生部族屠殺的報(bào)告，但未能引起足夠的重視。事發(fā)后，聯(lián)合國曾與10多個(gè)國家協(xié)商出兵盧旺達(dá)事宜，也未能成功，從而喪失了防患于未然的機(jī)會(huì)，導(dǎo)致了最后悲劇的發(fā)生。受美國控制的聯(lián)合國在盧旺達(dá)屠殺的過程中的角色是尷尬的。一貫以世界警察自居的美國佬，在全世界的各個(gè)角落引發(fā)著戰(zhàn)火，卻對不該發(fā)生的屠殺袖手旁觀。而聯(lián)合國在處理此事的不得力，也不禁讓人引發(fā)“聯(lián)合國的存在到底有何用”這樣的聯(lián)想。當(dāng)然，影片本身缺少這些問題的回答，導(dǎo)演也沒打算把《Hotel Rwanda》拍成一部批判影片。 

保羅·魯塞薩巴吉納是當(dāng)年事件的主角，是導(dǎo)演著力刻畫的一個(gè)“高、大、全”式的人物。黑人演員Keir Voices的歌名，這是一百萬人血淚的聲音。Pearson的精彩演出無疑為這個(gè)角色增色不少，他那帶著非洲腔調(diào)的英語和他細(xì)膩的演出，是本片大獲成功的另一個(gè)重要原因。他并不是一開始就是偉大的。他的偉大也伴隨著他自己的轉(zhuǎn)變，由剛開始保衛(wèi)家庭發(fā)展到后來拯救數(shù)千人于水火。這種轉(zhuǎn)變是一個(gè)普通人成長為英雄的過程，它體現(xiàn)了一個(gè)普通人在面臨巨大危機(jī)時(shí)的過人勇氣。 

    歷史是沉重的，尤其是帶血的歷史?！禜otel Rwanda》再現(xiàn)了歷史，它也當(dāng)然有理由和它表現(xiàn)的那段歷史一樣，被更多的人銘記。正如由Wyclef·Jean演唱的片尾曲《Million Voices》的歌名，這是一百萬人血淚的聲音
