畢達哥拉斯學派盛行于公元前六世紀,他們都是些數(shù)學家,天文學家和物理學家,當時希臘哲學的主要對象還是自然現(xiàn)象,畢達哥拉斯學派以及稍后的赫拉克利特都主要是從自然科學觀點去看美學問題的。在自然科學中當時哲學家們有一個普遍的企圖,就是在自然界雜多現(xiàn)象之中,找出統(tǒng)攝一切的原則或原素。畢達哥拉斯學派大半都是數(shù)學家,便認為萬物最基本的原素是數(shù),數(shù)的原則統(tǒng)治著宇宙中一切現(xiàn)象。這樣把事物的一種屬性(數(shù))加以絕對化,仿佛把它看成一種先于一切而獨立存在的東西,這就是客觀唯心主義的萌芽。這個基本觀點也影響到畢達哥拉斯學派對于美的看法。
他們認為美就是和諧。他們首先從數(shù)學和聲學的觀點去研究音樂節(jié)奏的和諧,發(fā)見聲音的質(zhì)的差別(如長短,高低,輕重等)都是由發(fā)音體方面數(shù)量的差別所決定的。例如發(fā)音體(如琴弦)長,聲音就長,震動速度快,聲音就高,震動速度慢,聲音就低。因此,音樂的基本原則在數(shù)量的關(guān)系,音樂節(jié)奏的和諧是由高低長短輕重各種不同的音調(diào),按照一定數(shù)量上的比例所組成的。這派學者是用數(shù)的比例來表示不同音程的創(chuàng)始人,例如第八音程是1:2,第四音程是3:4,第五音程是2:3。
從音樂里數(shù)量關(guān)系的研究中,畢達哥拉斯學派找到了一個辯證的原則,這個原則由這派門徒波里克勒特在他的《論法規(guī)》里這樣加以轉(zhuǎn)述:

這派學者還把數(shù)與和諧的原則應(yīng)用于天文學的研究,因而形成所謂“諸天音樂”或“宇宙和諧”的概念,認為天上諸星體在遵照一定軌道運動之中,也產(chǎn)生一種和諧的音樂。蘇聯(lián)美學史家阿斯木斯在《古代思想家論藝術(shù)》的序論里評論這種概念說,“音樂和諧的概念原只是對一種藝術(shù)領(lǐng)域研究的結(jié)果,畢達哥拉斯學派把它**到全體宇宙中去……因此,連天文學即宇宙學在這派看來,也具有美學的性質(zhì)”。他們把天體看成圓球形,認為這也是最美的形體。這里可注意的是畢達哥拉斯學派把整個自然界看作美學的對象,并不限于藝術(shù)。
畢達哥拉斯學派還注意到藝術(shù)對人的影響。他們提出兩個帶有“神秘色彩的看法,一個是“小宇宙”(人)類似“大宇宙”的看法(近似中國道家“小周天”的看法)。他們認為人體就像天體,都由數(shù)與和諧的原則統(tǒng)轄著。人有內(nèi)在的和諧,碰到外在的和諧,“同聲相應(yīng)”,所以欣然契合。因此,人才能愛美和欣賞藝術(shù)。另一個看法是人體的內(nèi)在和諧可以受到外在的和諧的影響。他們把這個概念應(yīng)用到醫(yī)學上去,得出類似中國醫(yī)學里陰陽五行說的結(jié)論。不但在身體方面,就是在心理方面,內(nèi)在和諧也可以受到外在和諧的影響。他們把音樂風格大體分為剛?cè)醿煞N,不同的音樂風格可以在聽眾中引起相應(yīng)的心情而引起性格的變化,例如聽者性格偏柔,剛的樂調(diào)可以使他的心情由柔變剛。藝術(shù)可以改變?nèi)说男郧楹托愿瘢援a(chǎn)生教育的作用。
畢達哥拉斯學派的帶有神秘主義色彩的客觀唯心主義的和形式主義的美學思想對柏拉圖,普洛丁的新柏拉圖主義以及文藝復(fù)興時代專心鉆研形式技巧的藝術(shù)家們,都發(fā)生過深刻的影響。
