19世紀(jì)70年代，恩格斯根據(jù)當(dāng)時(shí)自然科學(xué)發(fā)展所顯示的突破原有學(xué)科界限的新趨勢(shì)，在分析各種物質(zhì)運(yùn)動(dòng)形態(tài)相互轉(zhuǎn)化的基礎(chǔ)上指出，原有學(xué)科的鄰接領(lǐng)域?qū)⑹切聦W(xué)科的生長(zhǎng)點(diǎn)。此后在物理學(xué)、化學(xué)、生物學(xué)、地質(zhì)學(xué)、天文學(xué)等原有基礎(chǔ)學(xué)科相互交界的領(lǐng)域產(chǎn)生出了一系列的邊緣學(xué)科，如物理化學(xué)、生物化學(xué)、生物物理等等?，F(xiàn)代科學(xué)的發(fā)展表明,不僅在相互鄰接領(lǐng)域,而且在相距甚遠(yuǎn)的學(xué)科領(lǐng)域之間由于交叉和滲透，也不斷產(chǎn)生出新的邊緣學(xué)科，就是在自然科學(xué)和社會(huì)科學(xué)這兩大門類之間，也不斷產(chǎn)生出相互交叉和滲透的邊緣學(xué)科。邊緣學(xué)科的出現(xiàn)是物質(zhì)運(yùn)動(dòng)形式相互轉(zhuǎn)化的反映，它們?cè)絹?lái)越深刻地展示出自然界的動(dòng)態(tài)過(guò)程。邊緣學(xué)科不但有助于理解各門學(xué)科的聯(lián)系，而且有助于更深刻地揭示每種物質(zhì)運(yùn)動(dòng)形式的實(shí)質(zhì)和自然界的統(tǒng)一性。例如，生物化學(xué)、生物物理的研究使我們對(duì)生命過(guò)程和本質(zhì)及遺傳機(jī)制認(rèn)識(shí)得更加清楚了。邊緣學(xué)科的不斷產(chǎn)生表明了當(dāng)代科學(xué)發(fā)展的整體化趨勢(shì)。

20世紀(jì) 40年代以來(lái)，科學(xué)的不斷分化也可以看作是科學(xué)發(fā)展綜合化的一種表現(xiàn)形式，不斷出現(xiàn)的邊緣學(xué)科正日益消除各種傳統(tǒng)的學(xué)科界限，使各門科學(xué)結(jié)成一個(gè)完整統(tǒng)一的科學(xué)知識(shí)體系。邊緣學(xué)科的不斷產(chǎn)生大大擴(kuò)展了科學(xué)研究的對(duì)象，揭示了自然界新的奧秘，開創(chuàng)了新的實(shí)驗(yàn)技術(shù)，形成了新的理論思想，并且可以引起人類對(duì)整個(gè)客觀世界的認(rèn)識(shí)在觀念上的深刻變化，給予社會(huì)實(shí)踐以巨大的影響。

自然科學(xué)和社會(huì)科學(xué)之間也可以相互結(jié)合發(fā)展，形成新的交叉邊緣學(xué)科，如進(jìn)化金融學(xué)就是近年來(lái)興起的介于生物學(xué)和金融學(xué)的一門邊緣科學(xué)，進(jìn)化證券學(xué)則是介于生物學(xué)和證券學(xué)之間的邊緣學(xué)科。此外，技術(shù)科學(xué)和社會(huì)科學(xué)之間也可以相互結(jié)合發(fā)展，形成新的交叉邊緣學(xué)科，如網(wǎng)絡(luò)語(yǔ)言學(xué)就是網(wǎng)絡(luò)技術(shù)和語(yǔ)言科學(xué)有機(jī)融合而成的新興交叉學(xué)科，該學(xué)科由中國(guó)知名學(xué)者周海中教授首先提出，并受到學(xué)界關(guān)注和肯定。
