朱鹮是稀世珍禽，過去在中國東部、日本、俄羅斯、朝鮮等地曾有較廣泛的分布，由于環(huán)境惡化等因素導(dǎo)致種群數(shù)量急劇下降，至本世紀(jì)70年代野外已無蹤影。

我國鳥類學(xué)家經(jīng)多年考察，于1981年5月在陜西省洋縣重新發(fā)現(xiàn)朱鹮種群，也是世界上僅存的種群。此后對朱鹮的保護(hù)和科學(xué)研究進(jìn)行了大量工作，并取得顯著成果。特別是飼養(yǎng)繁殖方面，于1989年在世界上首次人工孵化成功，自1992年以來，雛鳥已能順利成活。至1995年，我國的野生朱鹮種群約35只，飼養(yǎng)種群有25只，為拯救這一珍禽帶來了希望。

外形特征：

春季是朱鹮的繁殖季節(jié)，這時(shí)成年的雄鳥和雌鳥結(jié)成配偶，離開越冬時(shí)組成的群體，分散在栓皮櫟樹等高大的喬木樹上去筑巢、產(chǎn)卵。這時(shí)它會用嘴不斷地啄取從頸部的肌肉中分泌出來的一種灰色的色素，涂抹到羽毛上，使它的頭部、頸部、上背和兩翅等都變成灰黑色。它的巢很像一個(gè)圓盤，十分簡陋，外徑73厘米，內(nèi)徑53厘米，深8厘米，距地面高度為5—20米。巢由樹枝架成，里面墊以玉米桿、蕨類、細(xì)藤條、草葉及草根等，有時(shí)也利用舊巢。每窩產(chǎn)卵2—4枚，卵的大小約為65×45毫米，卵重70克左右，表面是藍(lán)灰色或淺綠色的，上面帶有黑褐色的斑點(diǎn)。雄鳥和雌鳥輪流孵卵，孵化期大約需要28天。親鳥在孵卵期間經(jīng)常翻卵、晾卵、理巢等，孵卵時(shí)縮曲著頸部或?qū)㈩^部盤起來，有時(shí)站立起來舒展翅膀，或者抖動身體。但巢中往往只有一只親鳥，不孵卵的另一只親鳥并不在巢邊護(hù)巢，夜間則到其他樹上去棲息。雛鳥為晚成性，剛孵出時(shí)上體被有淡灰色的絨羽，下體被有白色絨羽，腳為橙紅色。出殼后由親鳥輪流將口中半消化的食物吐出喂養(yǎng)，性急的雛鳥們則爭著把長喙伸進(jìn)親鳥的嘴里，親鳥則使勁抖動著脖子，使食物盡快地吐出來。親鳥在育雛的前期每天返回巢中的次數(shù)為7—9次，隨著雛鳥的迅速生長和對食物需求的增加，后期則增加到每天14—15次。喂完食物后還要幫助雛鳥清理糞便，方法是叼走巢底的樹枝，使糞便漏到下面去，或者把沾有糞便的碎鋪墊物叼到巢的外邊，然后再叼來新的巢材和鋪墊物來補(bǔ)充。雛鳥在親鳥的精心哺育下生長很快，60天后就能跟隨親鳥自由飛翔了。性成熟的年齡為3歲左右，壽命最長的記錄為17年。
