這是漢譯中使用的借意字，組成的佛教用詞很多，如色法、色界、色蘊(yùn)等，巴利語(yǔ)是（rūpa）。

在古代的時(shí)候是不會(huì)與現(xiàn)代意義的“色欲”字義混淆的，那個(gè)是近代以后的用法，在古代，色的本意就是眼所見(jiàn)之事物，《說(shuō)文解字》說(shuō)“顏氣也。從人從卪。凡色之屬皆從色”，用現(xiàn)代話講就是物體通過(guò)視覺(jué)而產(chǎn)生的印象。

借用在佛教中翻譯，也是從這個(gè)原來(lái)佛教詞匯的本意去說(shuō)的，也就是說(shuō)本意是指物質(zhì)的認(rèn)知。在《阿毗達(dá)摩論》的講解中說(shuō)：

色，巴利叫作( rūpa )。它源于動(dòng)詞（ruppati），意思是變壞、破壞、壓破、逼迫、干擾。為什么要用色這個(gè)詞呢？不直接用“物”呢？用物質(zhì)的物呢？因?yàn)槿绻怯梦锏脑?，它并不能夠表達(dá)原來(lái)巴利的這種意思。這里講到的色，它并不是我們說(shuō)到的顏色的色，也不是講到女色的色。而是指物質(zhì)的顏色以及物質(zhì)的現(xiàn)象。

從點(diǎn)看出，顏色以及現(xiàn)象，這不正是《說(shuō)文》中對(duì)“色”這個(gè)字的本來(lái)解釋嗎？
