WC.的來歷

W.C.一詞是 water-closet 的縮寫，其中closet一字本作“小室”解。

《二十世紀(jì)辭典》對water-closet的解釋是：一間用作室的小室，“排出物”是用水沖走的。W.C.的意思易明，所以曾被廣泛采用。但是由于人人皆知W.C所指為何，因此有些人認(rèn)為不雅，便以其他較含糊的字眼來替代，如lavatory, restroom, bathroom, toilet powder-room等字，都有可以用來指廁所。

在一般公眾場所，廁所向例如以性別區(qū)分，男用的多寫上men，或gent's，女用的則寫上women或ladies'。是以在外國人口中，W.C. 一詞已基本已消失；但在很多以英語為基礎(chǔ)外語的地方卻還保留著，因為易于上口，一聽之后便不會忘記，這可以算是語言上的一種特色。
