約瑟夫·雅各布斯（1854-1916）出生在澳大利亞的悉尼，1872年移居英格蘭，就讀于劍橋大學(xué)國王學(xué)院，后對人類學(xué)產(chǎn)生興趣，成為英格蘭民俗學(xué)會重要成員。他用十年時間收集英國民間童話，分兩卷于1890和1894年出版，彌補了英國文學(xué)的一項缺憾。

1900年，舉家遷往美國紐約，雅各布斯先做《猶太大百科》的修訂編輯，后成為猶太神學(xué)院的英文教授。1914年返回歐洲治療心臟病，兩年后卒于此病，享年六十二歲。
