Most of the confidences were unsought - frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation or a hostile levity when I realised by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon; for the intimate revelations of young men, or at least the term in which they express them, are usually plagiaristic and marred by obvious suppressions. 第一，I have feigned sleep, preoccupation or hostile levity 這個結構是并列的，根據(jù)上下文可知，“我”其實想避開這些私密告白。 將“常裝睡，假裝全神貫注或是不厭其煩”這三個狀態(tài)中的 preoccupation 翻譯成“全神貫注”不夠準確，因為“全神貫注”是正面的，指集中精神，它與“裝睡”、“不厭其煩”所表現(xiàn)的有意避開不相配，會造成理解混亂。選擇Preoccupation另外的釋義“心事重重”，則會更貼近作者避開私密告白的本意。
