harmony是和聲，在音響(sound)的范疇里，廣義的和聲(harmony)可以是指任何由超過一個頻率所組合而成的聲音。但在西方音樂里面和聲也常常用來描述不同和弦(chord)的配搭手法，而和弦則通常較為狹義地描述同一時間演奏兩個或以上不同音高，但這兩個詞語在許多時候可以通用。

chord是和弦，在音樂理論里，是指組合在一起的兩個或更多不同音高的音。在歐洲古典音樂及受其影響的音樂風(fēng)格里，更多時候是指三個或以上的音高組合，而兩個音高的組合則以音程來描述。和弦的組成音，可分開演奏，亦可同時演奏。分開演奏的，我們稱為分解和弦〔或分散和弦〕。和弦有三度疊置及非三度疊置之分，在西方傳統(tǒng)和聲中的和弦，均按照三度疊置的原則構(gòu)成。
