Do You Like the English Self-taught Program? Why?

這道考題比較貼近考生的實(shí)際生活，要求考生講的無非是他們的一些心里話，因而不管是新生也好，老生也好，考試時(shí)面對這道問題"卡殼"的現(xiàn)象并不多。然而，就回答的質(zhì)量而言，卻還有不少地方有待于理高，相對于基本信息的表達(dá)而言，他們對于非基本信息，如情感等的表達(dá)，還顯得頗有欠缺。絕大多數(shù)的考生在考試中顯得較為拘謹(jǐn)，其對于節(jié)奏、語調(diào)、語流等的把握也較欠火候。由于這是英語專業(yè)和口語考試，要求自然不同于非英語專業(yè)口頭表達(dá)的要求。換言之，如果說我們對于非英語專業(yè)學(xué)生的要求是"交流"（communication），即把話說清楚，那么對于英語專業(yè)的學(xué)生來說，這個(gè)要求還遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)不夠，他們應(yīng)在"交流"的基礎(chǔ)上盡可能地把話說得地道些、流暢些，所表達(dá)的思想內(nèi)容應(yīng)帶有自己的特點(diǎn)，同時(shí)在語言開工上也應(yīng)具有英語表達(dá)的特點(diǎn)。其實(shí)，所謂內(nèi)容的個(gè)人特點(diǎn)人皆有之，只不過是并非人人皆知如何確切地表達(dá)而已。英語專業(yè)和學(xué)生若對此一無所知，那么你的專業(yè)特點(diǎn)如何得以體現(xiàn)呢？

這個(gè)問題的解決絕非能一而就，須經(jīng)過較長時(shí)間的有意識的訓(xùn)練。訓(xùn)練的有效方法之一便是平時(shí)要善于將大于單詞一級的語言單位，如詞組、短語、句子乃至于一組句子，不斷地進(jìn)行內(nèi)化，使之能夠得心應(yīng)手地為己所用。與此同時(shí)，的過程還須加以刻苦的練習(xí)――既可以與別人作對話練習(xí)，也可以自己面對錄音機(jī)作模擬回答，然后進(jìn)行自我檢查。一份辛苦必然會給你帶來一份收獲。為成功灑下的汗水才是成功最有力的支撐。

現(xiàn)在，筆者將考試中采集到的一些出現(xiàn)頻率很高的觀點(diǎn)用英語表達(dá)出來，供讀者參考。

先說開頭：

考生中幾乎沒有人對自學(xué)發(fā)生任何抱怨，或表示不喜歡。其實(shí)也是，來者都是樂此不疲者，要不，他們?yōu)楹渭绕屏速M(fèi)、又花了時(shí)間，趕到考場來找罪受呢？所以，其開頭所表達(dá)的意思多半是正面的。不達(dá)，即使是表示喜歡，也不能總是用一句"yes, I do"了事，比如，我們可以緊接其后頂上一句：

Yes, I like this self - taught program.

Yes, I do. This program is very helpful to me.

I've found this program to be beneficial.

I feel that is program has many advantages.

類似這樣的回答還能羅列出許多，但筆者在這里只圖點(diǎn)到為止，希望讀者對這種看似簡單的句子給予重視。學(xué)口語要注意英美人說話的一些特別方式，絕不要冷落了那些看似并不起眼的語言單位。簡單的結(jié)構(gòu)若能用得自然貼切，這恰恰就是一個(gè)最不簡單的本事。我們在看英語原版片時(shí)所聽到的一些地道的英文句子往往是說話人恰到好處地運(yùn)用極其簡單的詞語就出的。

同樣是"喜歡"這一相同的結(jié)果，各自參加考試的原因卻不盡相同：

a) 考大學(xué)未被錄取，便參加自學(xué)考試;

b) 現(xiàn)在，社會上的各行各業(yè)競爭激烈，獲得一張文憑、學(xué)會英語能使自己更具競爭力;

c) 外語變得越來越重要;

d) 對于外語有著特別的愛好;

e) 過去在學(xué)校里學(xué)外語主要是為了應(yīng)付考試，現(xiàn)在可以憑興趣選讀一些感興趣的內(nèi)容;

f) 自己覺得外語水平不夠用，通過自學(xué)考試可以系統(tǒng)地學(xué)習(xí)英語;

g) 社會需要既懂專業(yè)、又懂外語的復(fù)合型人才，故在業(yè)余時(shí)間里補(bǔ)習(xí)英語;

h) 學(xué)習(xí)其他專業(yè)需要較多的投入，會受到許多限制，而英語可以完全自學(xué)。

筆者發(fā)現(xiàn)考生中有兩種值得注意的現(xiàn)象：一種是"流利"有余，內(nèi)容表達(dá)不夠到位，更談不上到點(diǎn)。這是語言學(xué)習(xí)過程中的自由主義傾向，必須加以糾正。另一種是亦步亦趨，不敢越雷池一步，仿佛在做口譯，缺乏基本的口語特點(diǎn)。其實(shí)，上述的觀點(diǎn)完全可以在意義不走樣的前提下，用比較自由的形式表達(dá)出來：

a) Since I was unable to enroll in a university, this program was my only choice.

b) I find that in today's competitive job market, better English skills enhance my chance of advancing in my career.

c) It is increasingly important for me to have strong English skills for living and working in Shanghai.

d) Learning English has always appealed to me.

e) Since I am now freed from the pressure of exams, I can study English to become a better speaker and for its practical application: I no linger have to study simply simply for exams.

f) I have realized that my English is not accomplished enough for my work and, this program provides a structured project through which I can improve my skills.

g) I feel it's important for our society to have many people who are experts in their fields, and are also bilingual; by studying English, I can contribute to the society.

h) Language is one of the few subjects that can be learned without any elaborate facilities. Only a few books and perhaps some tapes are necessary. I enjoy studying new subjects, and English as a language is interesting to learn and convenient to study.

接下來我們來看一看連續(xù)表達(dá)。

觀點(diǎn)之一：

Three years ago, I failed to gain entry to university by just a few points. My only option, as a result, was to enroll in the self - taught program. I understood that it would be much more difficult to study and learn without a teacher and the structure of classes; but I think it's a good way for me to gain discipline and strengthen my willpower. I know that many great leaders, throughout the history, have not attended university. While I would never say that they became great because they didn't have a degree, I think it is evident that much can be attained by those who follow a different path other than the expected one. I hope to achieve success myself, even though I may be taking a slightly less direct route than I had originally anticipated.

開頭的第一句:

說的是該考生高考落榜。這個(gè)意思也可以這樣說：

最后一句：

"I hope to achieve success myself, even though I may be taking a slightly less direct than I had originally anticipated."此句所表達(dá)的意思是：自學(xué)之路會更加曲折，然而我想憑自己的努力學(xué)有所成。這個(gè)意思也可以用其他的句子來表達(dá)，如：

下面兩句雖然用的是challenging和difficult,但表示的意思仍然相同：

然而，在表達(dá)這個(gè)意思時(shí)，有些考生舍近求遠(yuǎn)，愛用一些大詞，如：uneven, zigzagging, 或復(fù)合詞up - and - down 等，如：

從"交流"的角度來看，上述句子不會給聽者帶來任何理解上的問題，但聽來總覺得有點(diǎn)怪、一種搭配上的不協(xié)調(diào)------盡管語法結(jié)構(gòu)無可挑剔。據(jù)筆者觀察，學(xué)習(xí)口語者中做類似這樣的"發(fā)明創(chuàng)造"的并不罕見。作者在這里希望大家在學(xué)習(xí)的過程中要多讀、并留意和積累地道的英語表現(xiàn)手段，力戒任何隨意的組合。換言之，假設(shè)在表達(dá)某一個(gè)意思時(shí)，語法上通得過的可能性盡管很多，但其中只有英美人會用的那一種或幾種形式才是真正的英文。口語學(xué)習(xí)者應(yīng)對這一點(diǎn)引起特別的重視。

觀點(diǎn)之二：

So I prefer to have the chance to meet with the teacher and find out all the answers I need, and then go back and study them.
