集束炸彈是將小型炸彈集合成一般的空用炸彈的形態(tài)，每個小型炸彈稱為子炸彈，因此又稱子母炸彈。具體是指在與一般炸彈同樣大小的彈體中，裝入由數(shù)個到數(shù)百個的子炸彈，子炸彈每顆約網(wǎng)球般大小的球體。

由飛行器空投之后，在空中分解，借由散布子炸彈到廣泛的地面造成區(qū)域性殺傷。利用其數(shù)量的特性增加涵蓋面積和殺傷范圍，可用于攻擊集群坦克,裝甲戰(zhàn)斗車輛、部隊集結(jié)地等集群目標(biāo)，或機場跑道等大面積目標(biāo)，具有較強的毀傷能力。
