中文譯名“形而上學(xué)”是根據(jù)《易經(jīng)·系辭》中“形而上者謂之道，形而下者謂之器”一語，由日本明治時(shí)期著名哲學(xué)家井上哲次郎翻譯。

晚清學(xué)者嚴(yán)復(fù)則采用了玄學(xué)這一翻譯，后經(jīng)清末留日學(xué)生將大批日制漢語（日本稱和制漢語）帶回國后，玄學(xué)這一譯法漸漸被形而上學(xué)取代。嚴(yán)復(fù)拒絕使用井上哲次郎的翻譯，根據(jù)老子《道德經(jīng)》"玄之又玄，眾妙之門"，把“metaphysical”一詞譯為玄學(xué)，但由于日本翻譯的一些詞匯雖然不甚貼切，卻往往更為簡單易懂，更容易被當(dāng)時(shí)受教育程度普遍較低的中國民眾所接受，因此“形而上學(xué)”一詞扎根在了漢語之中。
